Bible Verses About Healing: Scripture for Comfort

· Gospel Studies

Introduction

Bible verses about healing reveal a God who cares for sick bodies, binds up broken hearts, and through Jesus heals our deepest wound, which is sin, while inviting us to pray and keep trusting him when healing is slow (James 5:14-15; 2 Corinthians 12:9). When you or someone you love is sick, hurting, or waiting on a diagnosis, it’s natural to turn to God. The verses below are grouped by theme, each with a short explanation.

A note: these verses are meant to comfort and to lead you to prayer, alongside good medical care, not instead of it. Doctors and medicine are among God’s gifts.

1. God Is Our Healer

Jeremiah 17:14: Jeremiah asks God to heal and save him, trusting God alone. Jeremiah prayed this in the middle of opposition and discouragement. His request covers body and soul, because he knew that only God could truly make him whole.
Jeremiah prayed with confidence: if God heals, the healing is real. Healing and salvation sit side by side.

Exodus 15:26: God revealed himself to Israel as the Lord who heals.
One of God’s names in the Old Testament is “the LORD who heals.”

Psalm 103:2-3: Remember all God’s goodness: he forgives sins and heals diseases. David tells his own soul not to forget. Gratitude for forgiveness comes first in the list, a reminder that God’s greatest healing is spiritual.

2. God Heals the Brokenhearted

Psalm 147:3: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” The same psalm says God counts the stars and names each one. The God who runs the universe is gentle enough to bandage a wounded heart.
Psalm 34:18: The Lord stays close to people whose hearts are broken and rescues those who feel crushed. Feeling crushed doesn’t mean God has left. This verse says the opposite: he comes closest when we are at our lowest.
Not every wound is physical. God cares for grief, trauma, and emotional pain too.

3. Jesus the Healer

Matthew 4:23: Jesus traveled through Galilee teaching, preaching, and curing all kinds of illness.
Mark 5:34: Jesus told the healed woman her faith had made her whole and sent her away in peace. This woman had suffered for twelve years and spent everything on doctors. Jesus didn’t just heal her quietly; he called her daughter and restored her place in the community.
Luke 4:40: At sunset, people brought the sick to Jesus, and he touched and healed each one.
Jesus’ healings showed the kingdom of God breaking in, and gave a preview of a world made new.

4. Praying for Healing

James 5:14-15: The sick should call the church elders to pray over them and anoint them. James pictures the church gathering around the sick in prayer. Healing prayer isn’t a solo performance; it belongs to the whole family of faith.
Philippians 4:6: Pray about everything with thanksgiving instead of worrying.
God invites us to ask boldly for healing, and to involve the church.

5. When Healing Doesn’t Come Yet

2 Corinthians 12:9: God’s grace is enough, and his power shows most clearly in our weakness. Paul asked three times for his thorn to be removed. God’s answer was not a cure but a deeper supply of grace. That answer is still love.
2 Corinthians 4:16: Though our bodies wear out, our inner life is renewed day by day.
Sometimes God heals now; sometimes he gives grace to endure. Neither means he loves us less.

6. Complete Healing Is Coming

Revelation 21:4: One day God will dry every tear, and death, grief, and pain will be gone. This is the healing that never wears off. Every hospital, every grief and every grave will one day be gone.
For every believer, final healing is certain in the resurrection.

The Gospel Focus: Healed by His Wounds

Isaiah 53:5: The suffering servant was wounded for our sins, and his wounds bring us peace and healing.
1 Peter 2:24: Jesus carried our sins in his own body on the cross.
Our deepest sickness is sin, and Jesus healed it at the cross. Every physical healing is a sign of that greater healing, and a promise of the full healing to come.

How to Apply This

  1. Pray honestly and specifically. Tell God exactly what hurts and ask him for healing. He invites bold requests.
  2. Involve your church. Ask your pastor or elders to pray with you, as James 5:14 describes.
  3. Keep seeing your doctor. Use medical care as one of God’s gifts, and pray over each appointment and treatment.
  4. Care for your heart too. If grief or trauma is part of your pain, consider a counselor or a trusted friend. God heals the brokenhearted, often through people.
  5. Hold on to the final promise. On hard days, read Revelation 21:1-5 and remember that complete healing is coming.

A Prayer for Healing

Lord, you are my healer. Heal me and save me, because you alone can. You see every hurt in my body and my heart. I ask for your healing touch, and for wisdom for those caring for me. If healing doesn’t come yet, give me grace that’s sufficient. Thank you that by Jesus’ wounds I am healed of my sin, and that one day you’ll dry every tear for good. Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does God still heal today?

Yes. Christians believe God still heals, sometimes through medicine, sometimes through answered prayer in ways doctors can’t explain, and always spiritually through Christ. He invites us to ask (James 5:14-15).

Why doesn’t God heal everyone right away?

Scripture doesn’t give every reason. Paul’s own request was answered with grace instead of a cure (2 Corinthians 12:9). God’s love is not measured by whether healing comes now, and full healing is promised in the resurrection (Revelation 21:4).

What does Isaiah 53:5 mean by healing?

Isaiah 53:5 speaks first of healing from sin through the suffering of the Messiah. Jesus’ death brings us peace with God, and every physical healing points to that deeper healing.
