A devotional on desperate faith meets a woman who had nothing left. In Mark 5:34 (ESV) Jesus told her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” After years of suffering, she reached for Jesus, and he gave her healing, peace, and a new name.
Key Verse
“And he said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.’” (Mark 5:34, ESV)
Twelve Long Years
Mark says the woman had suffered bleeding for twelve years. She had seen many doctors, spent everything she had, and only grown worse. Under the law her condition also made her ceremonially unclean. She was sick, poor, and isolated.
Maybe you know some of that exhaustion: a long illness, a problem that will not go away, a loneliness that lingers. Hope can wear thin when every new attempt ends in disappointment. Yet she tried one more time, and this time she reached for Jesus.
Just a Touch
She had heard about Jesus. She thought that if she could only touch his garments, she would be made well. So she pushed through the crowd and reached out. Immediately the bleeding stopped.
Her faith was not polished. It was desperate. But desperate faith reaching for Jesus is real faith.
Who Touched Me?
Jesus stopped and asked who touched his garments. The disciples thought it was a strange question in such a crowd. But Mark says Jesus knew that healing power had flowed out of him (Mark 5:30). He kept looking.
Trembling, the woman came forward, knelt before him and confessed everything. Jesus did not want her to slip away healed but hidden. He wanted to meet her face to face.
Daughter
Jesus called her daughter. She had been an outsider for years. Now she was named family. He told her that her faith had made her well and to go in peace. Healing reached her body and her heart.
When Healing Is Different
Not every prayer for healing is answered the way we hope. Many faithful people live with chronic illness. Jesus’ welcome, though, is for all who reach for him. If you are carrying long suffering, keep reaching, keep seeing doctors, and let trusted people help you carry it.
Desperate faith is not polished faith. It may come with trembling hands, mixed motives, and very little hope left. Jesus still welcomes it. He cares less about how strong your faith feels and more about where it reaches.
Today, Try This
Tell Jesus honestly about the long struggle you have carried. Then reach out to one trusted person and share it, so you are not carrying it alone.
Reflection Question
What long struggle do you need to bring to Jesus with desperate faith?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you noticed a woman everyone else overlooked. I reach out to you with my weak, desperate faith. Heal what you will, give me your peace, and remind me that I am your child. In your name, amen.

What does Mark 5:34 mean?
In Mark 5:34 (ESV), Jesus tells the healed woman that her faith made her well, calls her daughter, and sends her in peace. It shows Jesus’ power and his personal care.
Why did Jesus ask who touched him?
Jesus wanted to meet the woman personally, restore her publicly, and call her daughter, not just heal her body.
Does strong faith guarantee physical healing?
No. God sometimes heals and sometimes gives strength to endure. Faith means trusting Jesus whatever the outcome, while still praying and seeking good medical care.
