Devotional on Healing: Heal Me, O Lord (Jeremiah 17:14)

· Devotionals

For April 19

A devotional on healing begins with a simple, honest prayer from Jeremiah 17:14 (ESV): Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise. Whether your wound is physical, emotional, or spiritual, you can bring it to the God who heals.

Key Verse

“Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise.” (Jeremiah 17:14, ESV)

Jeremiah’s Prayer

Jeremiah was called the weeping prophet. He served God faithfully during a dark time in Judah’s history, facing rejection, mockery, and persecution. In this chapter, he contrasts those who trust in human strength with those who rely on the Lord. Then he turns to God personally and asks for healing and salvation.

Jeremiah knew that only God could truly heal and save him.

God the Healer

Throughout Scripture, God reveals himself as the one who heals. Jesus healed the sick, restored sight to the blind, and touched lepers. His healing ministry showed that God’s kingdom had come near. Most importantly, Jesus came to heal the deepest wound of all, our separation from God because of sin.

God still heals today, sometimes through miracles, often through doctors, medicine, time, and community, and ultimately in the resurrection.

When Healing Doesn’t Come Yet

Many faithful believers pray for healing that does not come in this life. That is painful and confusing. Paul prayed three times for his thorn to be removed. God’s answer was that his grace was sufficient. Unanswered prayers for healing do not mean God does not love you or that your faith is too small.

Every believer will one day receive complete healing when Christ returns and makes all things new.

Praying for Healing

Pray boldly and honestly for healing. Ask others to pray with you. Receive medical care as a gift from God. Bring emotional wounds to him, and consider counseling for trauma or grief. If you feel hopeless, please reach out to a trusted person, or in the US call or text 988.

Healing may come quickly, slowly, or in ways we did not expect. Sometimes God heals the body, sometimes the heart, and sometimes he gives strength to endure. Keep praying honestly, seek good medical care, and trust that he is near in every outcome.

Today, Try This

Reflection Question

What wound do you need to bring to God for healing today?

Prayer

Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise. I bring you my body, my heart, and my soul. Heal what is broken. Give me grace while I wait, and hope in your promise to make all things new. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Christians believe God still heals, sometimes miraculously and often through medicine, doctors, and time. He may not heal every illness in this life, but he promises complete healing in the resurrection.

Why doesn’t God heal everyone who prays?

Scripture does not give a full answer. Paul’s thorn remained despite prayer, yet God’s grace sustained him. Unhealed suffering is not proof of weak faith. God works for his people’s good and promises ultimate restoration.
