A Pentecost devotional celebrates the day God poured out his Spirit. Acts 2:4 (ESV) says they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Pentecost marks the birth of the church and the beginning of the gospel going to every nation.
Key Verse
“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:4, ESV)
From Harvest Feast to Spirit Outpouring
Pentecost, also called the Feast of Weeks, was one of Israel’s three great pilgrimage festivals. It celebrated the wheat harvest and, in later Jewish tradition, was also linked with remembering the giving of the law at Sinai. Jews from across the Roman world traveled to Jerusalem for it, which is why so many languages were represented in the crowd.
Luke lists the nations represented, from Parthians and Medes in the east to visitors from Rome in the west. The list is no accident. At Babel, human pride led to scattering and confusion of languages. At Pentecost, God’s grace gathered people from many lands to hear one message in their own tongues. The first harvest of the church had arrived.
The Day of Pentecost
Pentecost was a Jewish harvest festival held fifty days after Passover. Jerusalem was filled with pilgrims from many nations. The disciples were gathered together when a roar like a violent wind filled the house, and what looked like flames of fire rested on each of them.
In 2027, the church celebrates Pentecost today, May 16, fifty days after Easter.
All Were Filled
Luke says they were all filled. Not just the apostles or leaders, but every believer present. The Spirit was not reserved for a spiritual elite. This fulfilled the prophet Joel’s promise that God would pour out his Spirit on all flesh, sons and daughters, young and old.
The same Spirit lives in every Christian today.
The Nations Hear
The disciples began speaking in other languages, and pilgrims from many nations heard the wonders of God in their own languages. Pentecost reversed the scattering of Babel. Instead of confusion and division, the Spirit brought understanding and unity around Jesus.
From the very start, the church was meant to be multinational and multilingual.
Peter Preaches
Peter, who weeks earlier had denied Jesus, stood up and preached boldly. He explained that Jesus, whom they had crucified, God had raised and exalted. About three thousand people believed and were baptized that day. The Spirit transformed a fearful fisherman into a fearless witness.
Pentecost Today
Pentecost reminds us that the Christian life is impossible without the Spirit and wonderfully possible with him. He gives power to witness, gifts to serve, fruit to grow, and comfort in sorrow. Ask him to fill you again today.
Pentecost also reminds us that God keeps his promises. Jesus told the disciples to wait for the Spirit, and the Spirit came exactly as promised. Whatever promise of God you are holding onto today, Pentecost is evidence that he is faithful.
Depending on the Spirit Each Day
The Spirit who filled the believers at Pentecost is not only for special occasions. He is given to help ordinary Christians live ordinary days in a new way. Begin each morning by asking him to lead you. When you read Scripture, ask him to open your understanding. When you face temptation, ask for his strength. When you have a chance to speak about Jesus, ask for courage.
You may not hear a rushing wind or see tongues of fire. But you can trust that he is at work as you pray, obey, and serve. Look back at the end of the day and thank God for the ways you saw the Spirit’s help, even in small things.
Today, Try This
Read Acts 2:1-41 today. Then pray for one nation or people group to hear the gospel in their own language.
Reflection Question
How would your life look different if you relied more fully on the Holy Spirit’s power?
Prayer
Holy Spirit, thank you for coming at Pentecost and for living in me. Fill me again today. Give me courage to speak of Jesus, love for people of every nation, and power to live for God’s glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
