For May 12

An Acts 1:8 devotional prepares our hearts for Pentecost. In Acts 1:8 (ESV), Jesus promises, You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses. The power of the Spirit is not for showing off. It is for telling the world about Jesus.

Key Verse

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”” (Acts 1:8, ESV)

Waiting for the Promise

Before his ascension, Jesus told the disciples to wait in Jerusalem for what the Father had promised. They asked whether he would now restore the kingdom to Israel. Jesus redirected them. Their job was not to calculate timelines but to receive power and become witnesses.

Between the ascension and Pentecost, they waited and prayed together.

Power From the Spirit

The word for power suggests ability and strength. The disciples had already proven they could not follow Jesus faithfully in their own strength. They needed God’s power within them. The Spirit would give boldness, wisdom, and words they did not have on their own.

The same Spirit lives in every believer today.

Witnesses Near and Far

Jesus outlined an expanding mission: Jerusalem, all Judea and Samaria, and the end of the earth. The book of Acts follows this pattern as the gospel spreads from a city to a region to the nations. For us, Jerusalem might be our home and workplace. Samaria might be people we find difficult. The ends of the earth include global missions we support and pray for.

A witness simply tells what they have seen and heard. You do not need to be an expert, only honest about Jesus.

Ready for Pentecost

Pentecost is this Sunday. Use these days to ask the Spirit to fill you, give you courage, and open opportunities to share Christ.

Waiting can feel unproductive, but the disciples used those days well. They prayed together, stayed united, and prepared for what God would do. Seasons of waiting can be seasons of readiness.

Being a witness does not require a stage or a title. It starts with the people already around you, a coworker, a neighbor, or a family member. Ask the Spirit for courage to share one honest sentence about what Jesus means to you.

Today, Try This

Write down one name for each circle in Acts 1:8: someone near you, someone you find difficult, and a people group far away. Pray for each today.

Reflection Question

Where is God calling you to be his witness right now?

Prayer

Holy Spirit, fill me with your power. Make me a faithful witness for Jesus at home, among difficult people, and to the farthest places on earth. Give me courage and words, and let my life point others to Christ. In Jesus’ name, amen.
