A widow’s offering devotional begins with Jesus watching people give. In Mark 12:43-44 (ESV) he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box.” The rich gave from abundance, but she gave everything she had. God measures generosity by the heart and the cost.
Key Verse
“And he called his disciples to him and said to them, ‘Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box.’” (Mark 12:43, ESV)
Jesus Sat and Watched
Jesus sat opposite the temple treasury and watched as people put in money. Many rich people gave large amounts. Then a poor widow arrived and dropped in two tiny coins, worth very little.
No one else would have noticed her. Jesus did.
More Than All
Jesus called his disciples over and told them that she had given more than everyone else. In dollars, that was not true. But in God’s eyes, it was. The others gave what they would not miss. She gave everything she needed to get by.
God does not need our money. He looks at what our giving reveals about our trust.
Right After a Warning
Just before this, Jesus warned about religious leaders who liked honor and who devoured widows’ houses. The contrast is sharp. Proud leaders took from widows. A humble widow gave to God.
Her story is not an excuse to pressure the poor. It is a rebuke to those who exploit them and an honor to quiet, costly faith.
Small Gifts Matter
Maybe you feel your gifts are tiny: a small offering, a short prayer, a few hours of help. Jesus sees them. Faithfulness is not measured by size. A small gift given in love and trust can mean more to God than a large one given for show.
Giving From Trust
The widow trusted God to care for her. Generosity grows as trust grows. If giving makes you anxious, start where you are, with prayer and a gift that stretches your faith a little. If you are in financial hardship, God sees that too. Giving can also be time, kindness, and prayer.
God still notices small gifts. The note to a lonely friend, the hour given when you are tired, the offering that costs you something: none of it is too small for him to see and treasure.
Today, Try This
Give one gift this week that costs you something, whether money, time, or attention, and give it quietly without telling anyone.
Reflection Question
What would it look like for your giving to reflect trust in God rather than leftover abundance?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you see every gift, no matter how small. Thank you that you value the heart behind it. Teach me to give from trust, not just from extra. Make me generous, humble, and faithful in little things. In your name, amen.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Mark 12:43-44 mean?
In Mark 12:43-44 (ESV), Jesus says a poor widow gave more than the rich because she gave all she had. God values sacrificial, trusting generosity over the size of a gift.
How much did the widow give?
She gave two small copper coins, among the smallest coins in use. Though tiny in value, it was all the money she had.
Does God expect us to give everything like the widow?
Jesus praises her faith rather than setting a rule for every situation. He calls each believer to give generously and trustingly, with a heart devoted to God.
