The Truth Will Set You Free Devotional: John 8:31-32

For July 2

This devotional on truth and freedom begins with the full sentence Jesus spoke. In John 8:31-32 he told those who believed him that if they keep living in his teaching, they are real disciples, and “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32, ESV). Freedom comes through knowing Jesus and staying in his word.

Key Verse

“and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32, ESV)

A Phrase Often Taken Out of Context

People quote the line about truth setting us free in courtrooms, classrooms, and on building walls. Often it means that facts or education will liberate us. Facts matter, but Jesus was saying something deeper.

He spoke to people who had believed him. He told them that real discipleship means abiding in his word, staying and living there. The truth he promised is not just information. It is himself and his teaching.

Free From What?

His listeners objected. They said they had never been anyone’s slaves. Jesus answered that anyone who keeps on sinning is enslaved by sin (John 8:34). The freedom he offers is freedom from sin’s power and its guilt.

Many of us know this kind of slavery. A habit we cannot break. A shame we cannot shake. A fear that controls our choices. Jesus does not just give advice about these things. He sets us free.

Abiding Comes First

Notice the order. Abide in his word, know the truth, and that truth sets you free. Freedom grows as we spend time with Jesus in Scripture, believe what he says, and obey it.

Abiding is not a quick visit. It is like making a home. We return to his word again and again, letting it shape how we think, what we want, and how we live.

Truth Is a Person

Later in John, Jesus calls himself the truth (John 14:6). That helps us understand this promise. The truth that frees us is not an idea we master. It is a Person we trust.

When lies tell you that you are worthless, unforgivable, or alone, the truth of who Jesus is and what he has done speaks louder. His truth tells you that you are loved, forgiven, and held.

Living as Free People

Freedom in Christ is not freedom to do whatever we want. It is freedom to become who God made us to be. Each day we choose to stay in his word and let his truth guide us.

Going Deeper: John 8:31-32 Phrase by Phrase

A Common Misquote

You’ll see “the truth will set you free” carved on university buildings and used in courtrooms and ads. Often it’s taken to mean that knowledge or facts in general bring freedom. But Jesus was saying something more specific, and far more life-changing.

The Condition: “If you abide in my word”

The promise starts with an “if.” Jesus spoke to people who had begun to believe, and he called them to keep going: to remain in his teaching. True disciples don’t just agree with Jesus once; they keep living in his word.

The Truth: Jesus Himself

The “truth” here isn’t just information; it’s the truth Jesus reveals about God, ourselves, and salvation. In John, truth is personal: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). To know the truth is to know Jesus.

The Freedom: From Sin

His listeners objected: “We… have never been enslaved to anyone” (v. 33). Jesus answered, “everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin” (v. 34). The freedom he means is freedom from sin’s power and guilt. And he alone gives it: “if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (v. 36).

Today, Try This

Pick one lie you often believe about yourself or God. Write it down, then write a truth from Scripture beside it. Read that truth aloud each morning this week.

Reflection Question

Where do you need the truth of Jesus to set you free right now?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you are the truth. Help me abide in your word and not just visit it. Free me from the sin and lies that hold me. Teach me to trust you and live as one who has been set free. In your name, amen.
