For June 19

A devotional on freedom in Christ celebrates the liberty Jesus won. Galatians 5:1 (ESV) says, For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Through the cross, Christ frees us from sin’s guilt and power and from trying to earn God’s love.

Key Verse

“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1, ESV)

A Day About Freedom

June 19 is Juneteenth, a US federal holiday remembering the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they had been declared free. It is a day to remember the deep evil of slavery, lament its lasting wounds, and celebrate freedom. Scripture has much to say about freedom, from the exodus to the cross.

God has always cared about the oppressed and the captive.

Freedom From Sin

Paul says Christ has set us free. The deepest slavery is to sin, which controls and destroys. Jesus said whoever keeps sinning is enslaved to sin, but those the Son sets free are truly free. His death breaks sin’s penalty and power.

You do not have to obey old habits and addictions as a master. In Christ, you can say no.

Freedom From Earning

In Galatians, Paul was warning believers who were tempted to add law-keeping as a requirement for salvation. He called that a yoke of slavery. Trying to earn God’s acceptance through performance always leads to anxiety and pride. Christ has already done it all.

Grace frees us from the treadmill of trying to be good enough.

Freedom to Love

Christian freedom is not freedom to do whatever we want. A few verses later, Paul says not to turn freedom into an excuse for the flesh, but to serve one another in love. True freedom is freedom to love God and others as we were made to.

Stand Firm

Paul urges us to stand firm. Freedom can be lost in practice when we slip back into old patterns of sin or legalism. Stay rooted in the gospel, in community, and in the Spirit’s power.

Freedom in Christ is not freedom to do whatever we want. It is freedom from sin’s grip and freedom for love. Each day we can choose to use that freedom to serve, forgive, and honor God with our lives.
