Mary and Martha Devotional: The One Thing Necessary

· Devotionals

For July 17

A Mary and Martha devotional centers on Jesus’ gentle words in Luke 10:41-42, where he tells a worried, overworked Martha that only one thing is truly needed, and Mary has chosen it. Busy service matters, but sitting with Jesus matters most, and he invites anxious hearts to that better place.

Key Verse

“but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:42, ESV)

Two Sisters, One Guest

Martha welcomed Jesus into her home. That was generous and good. There was food to prepare and guests to serve. Meanwhile her sister Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to him teach.

Martha grew frustrated. She asked Jesus whether he cared that her sister had left her to serve alone. She wanted him to send Mary to help.

Distracted, Not Wrong

Luke says Martha was pulled away by all the work of serving (Luke 10:40). Her work was not sinful. Hospitality is a gift. But she let the work pull her away from the person she was serving. She ended up resentful and anxious.

Many of us are Marthas. We do good things for God and slowly lose the joy of being with God.

Jesus Says Her Name Twice

Jesus’ reply begins by saying her name twice. It is tender. He does not scold her harshly. He sees her worry and names it: she is worried and upset over a long list of things (Luke 10:41).

Then he points her to the one thing. Of all the tasks on her list, only one was truly necessary: being with him.

The Good Portion

Jesus says Mary chose the better part, which no one will take from her. Meals are eaten and forgotten. Time with Jesus leaves something that lasts. His words shape us long after the dishes are done.

That is why daily time in Scripture and prayer is not a luxury. It is the part that feeds everything else.

Choosing Today

Mary chose. Sitting at Jesus’ feet rarely happens by accident. We must decide to set aside distractions, even good ones, for a while. Martha’s work still had to be done eventually, but it could wait for the most important thing.

Busy service is not the enemy here. Martha loved Jesus and wanted to honor him. The lesson is about order. When we sit with him first, our work flows from rest instead of resentment, and our service becomes worship again.

Today, Try This

Before you start your to-do list tomorrow, spend ten minutes reading one of Jesus’ teachings and simply listening. Notice how it changes the tone of your day.

Reflection Question

What many things are making you anxious and troubled, and what would it look like to choose the good portion?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you see how distracted and anxious I get. Thank you for saying my name with kindness. Help me choose the good portion and sit at your feet. Let my service flow from time with you, not replace it. In your name, amen.
