A feeding the five thousand devotional centers on John 6:11 (ESV): “Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated.” A boy’s small lunch became enough for thousands. When we place our little in Jesus’ hands, he can do far more than we imagine.
Key Verse
“Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted.” (John 6:11, ESV)
A Test Question
A huge crowd followed Jesus. He asked Philip where they could buy bread for all these people. John tells us Jesus already had a plan. He was testing Philip.
Philip did the math. Even a large amount of money would not buy enough for everyone to get a little.
Not Enough
Andrew pointed out a boy with five small barley rolls and a couple of fish, then wondered aloud what good that could do for such a crowd (John 6:9). Most of us know that feeling. Our time, money, energy, or ability seems far too small for the need.
Jesus does not ask us to supply what we do not have. He asks for what we do have.
Taken, Thanked, Given
Jesus had the people sit on the grass. He took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them. He did the same with the fish, giving them all they wanted. Everyone ate until they were satisfied.
Notice he gave thanks for something that looked insufficient. Gratitude came before the miracle.
Nothing Wasted
The boy could have kept his lunch. It was not much, but it was his. Instead it ended up in Jesus’ hands. We do not know his name, yet his small gift is remembered wherever this story is told. That is how God often works: ordinary people, ordinary gifts, extraordinary results.
Afterward Jesus told the disciples to gather the leftover fragments so nothing would be lost. They filled twelve baskets. Jesus provided more than enough, and he cared about what remained.
The Bread Behind the Bread
The next day Jesus told the crowd that he himself is the bread of life. The miracle pointed to something greater. He does not only feed bodies. He satisfies souls.
Bring him your small offering and your deep hunger. He receives both.
Whatever you have today, however small, give thanks for it and place it in his hands.
Today, Try This
Identify a need you feel too small to meet. Offer Jesus what you do have, even if it seems tiny, and thank him for it before you see results.
Reflection Question
What small thing could you place in Jesus’ hands this week?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I often feel I have too little. Here is what I have. Take it, bless it, and use it for your glory. Thank you that you satisfy my soul and waste nothing. In your name, amen.
