A Bread of Life devotional centers on one of Jesus’ great I AM statements. In John 6:35 (ESV), he says, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. Jesus alone satisfies the deepest hunger of the human heart.
Key Verse
“Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35, ESV)
After the Miracle
The day before, Jesus fed more than five thousand people with five loaves and two fish. The crowd followed him across the lake, hoping for more free food. Jesus gently confronted them. They were seeking bread that perishes instead of the food that lasts forever.
Many of us do the same. We want God’s gifts more than God himself.
I Am the Bread of Life
Bread was a basic staple in the ancient world. It represented daily sustenance. By calling himself the bread of life, Jesus claimed to be essential for spiritual life. He also connected himself to the manna God gave Israel in the wilderness. Manna sustained them for a day. Jesus gives eternal life.
He is not just one option for spiritual nourishment. He is the bread we cannot live without.
Coming and Believing
Jesus says whoever comes to him and believes in him will be satisfied. Coming and believing describe the same response: trusting Jesus personally. Satisfaction is not found in religious activity or achievement. It is found in a relationship with him.
Many people try to fill inner hunger with success, relationships, entertainment, or possessions. These can be good gifts, but they cannot satisfy the soul.
Feeding on Jesus Daily
Just as we need bread every day, we need Jesus every day. We feed on him through his word, prayer, worship, and the Lord’s Supper. Bring your hunger to him today. Let him fill what nothing else can.
Hunger is not a sign of failure. It is a reminder that we were made for God. Let every pang of restlessness point you back to the One who invites you to come.
Today, Try This
Notice what you reach for today when you feel empty or restless, and each time, pause and pray, Jesus, you are my bread of life.
Reflection Question
What have you been using to satisfy your soul’s hunger instead of Jesus?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are the bread of life. I confess I often look elsewhere to satisfy my hunger. Fill me with yourself. Help me come to you and believe in you each day. Thank you that in you I will never truly hunger or thirst. Amen.
