The armor of God in Ephesians 6:10–18 is the spiritual protection God provides so believers can hold their ground against the devil’s tactics: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and God’s word, all put on through prayer. This devotional walks through each piece and how to wear it daily.
Key Verse
“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:11, ESV)
Reflection
Paul wrote his letter to the Ephesians while chained to a Roman soldier. Every day he would have seen the soldier’s equipment up close: the belt, the breastplate, the sandals, the shield, the helmet, the sword. So when Paul reached the end of his letter and wanted to describe how believers can stand firm, he reached for the image right in front of him.
Paul begins by telling us to draw our strength from the Lord and his great power (Ephesians 6:10). Notice where the strength comes from. Paul does not say “be strong” and leave us to summon courage from within. He says draw strength from the Lord. Our strength is borrowed. It comes from God’s might, the same power that raised Jesus to life, as Paul described earlier in the letter.
“Put on the whole armor of God.” The word “whole” matters. Paul is not offering a menu where we pick our favorite pieces. We need all of it. And notice it is God’s armor. He provides it; we put it on.
“That you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” Paul is honest that the Christian life involves a real spiritual battle. The word “schemes” suggests strategy and deception. Our enemy rarely attacks head-on. He works through lies, discouragement, division, and temptation that looks harmless at first. In the next verse Paul says our struggle is not against flesh and blood. The people who frustrate us are not the true enemy.
Paul then describes each piece. The belt of truth holds everything together; living honestly and grounding ourselves in God’s truth keeps us steady. The breastplate of righteousness guards the heart; we stand in Christ’s righteousness and pursue right living. The shoes of the gospel of peace give us firm footing and readiness to share the good news. The shield of faith extinguishes the flaming arrows of the evil one, the doubts and accusations that fly at us. The helmet of salvation protects our minds with the assurance that we belong to God. And the Spirit’s sword, God’s word, is our one offensive weapon, the same weapon Jesus used when he was tempted in the wilderness.
Paul ends with prayer: praying constantly in the Spirit (Ephesians 6:18), staying alert, and praying for all the saints. Armor without prayer is like a soldier who never talks to his commander.
Notice also how often Paul repeats one word in this passage: stand. The goal is not to win the war ourselves. Jesus has already won the decisive victory at the cross. Our calling is to stand firm in what he has accomplished, holding our ground against every attempt to pull us away.
Today, as you face whatever battles come your way, remember that you do not fight in your own strength. Put on the armor God provides, and stand.
Today, Try This
Read Ephesians 6:10–18 slowly this morning. As you go through each piece of armor, pray it over a specific area of your life, such as truth for a decision or faith for a fear, and ask God to help you stand.
Reflection Question
Which piece of the armor of God do you most need to put on today, and why?
Prayer
Lord, I am strong only in you and in the power of your might. Clothe me in your whole armor: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and your word. Keep me alert in prayer and help me stand firm today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the six pieces of the armor of God?
The armor of God in Ephesians 6 has six pieces: the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Paul adds persistent prayer.
What does it mean to put on the armor of God?
Putting on the armor of God means intentionally relying on Christ's truth, righteousness, salvation, and word to stand against spiritual attack. In Ephesians 6:10 Paul tells believers to draw their strength from the Lord and his mighty power. The strength is God's, not ours.
Who is our real enemy according to Ephesians 6?
Ephesians 6:12 says our real battle isn't with other people but with evil spiritual powers. People are not ultimately the enemy. That changes how Christians handle conflict: resisting evil while loving people, even those who oppose them. The armor is for standing firm.
