· Devotionals

For March 20

A devotional on Jesus the humble king prepares our hearts for Palm Sunday. Zechariah 9:9 (ESV) calls God’s people to rejoice, because their king is coming, righteous and having salvation, humble and mounted on a donkey. Jesus fulfilled this prophecy, showing a kingship built on humility, not force.

Key Verse

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” (Zechariah 9:9, ESV)

A Prophecy of Joy

Zechariah spoke to God’s people after the exile, when Jerusalem was small and struggling. Into their discouragement came a promise: your king is coming to you. Not a distant ruler, but a king coming to his people. They were called to rejoice greatly and shout aloud.

Five centuries later, Jesus would deliberately fulfill these words.

Righteous and Saving

The king Zechariah describes is righteous and has salvation. He is not corrupt like many earthly rulers. He brings rescue. Jesus is this King. He came not to exploit his people but to save them, ultimately by giving his life.

His righteousness is not only his own. Through faith, he shares it with us.

Humble on a Donkey

Kings usually rode warhorses in victory parades. But this King rides a donkey, an animal of peace and humility. When Jesus entered Jerusalem on a colt, he was announcing his kingship while showing what kind of King he is. He came gently, not to crush enemies with violence but to defeat sin and death through the cross.

His humility invites us to come near. We do not have to fear approaching him.

Welcoming the King

Tomorrow is Palm Sunday. Before we wave palms, we can ask: have I welcomed Jesus as King of my life? Are there areas I am keeping from his rule? His reign is gentle, but it is total. He deserves our joy, trust, and obedience.

Holy Week can also stir mixed feelings. The same crowds that welcomed Jesus would soon turn away. Our own devotion can be just as fickle. The good news is that the humble King does not depend on our consistency. He came to save people who would fail him, and he still does.

Today, Try This
