Devotional on Insecurity: You Are God’s Workmanship

For January 29

This devotional on insecurity answers the lie that you are not enough with God’s truth: you are his intentional work of art. Paul writes, “we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works” (Ephesians 2:10, ESV). Your worth rests on what God made and what Christ did, not on approval, appearance, or performance.

Key Verse

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10, ESV)

Why Insecurity Grows

Insecurity whispers constantly. You are not good enough. Everyone else has it together. If people really knew you, they would not like you. It shows up in comparing ourselves online, replaying awkward conversations, needing reassurance, or avoiding opportunities because we fear failure.

Insecurity grows when we look for our worth in things that keep shifting: appearance, achievement, approval, relationships, or social media numbers. When identity rests on those, we are always one bad day away from feeling worthless.

You Are God’s Workmanship

Ephesians 2:10 gives a different foundation. For we are his workmanship. Paul’s word can describe a crafted work of art. You are not an accident. You were made by a skilled and loving Creator.

Created in Christ Jesus. Just before this verse, Paul explains that we are saved by grace through faith, not by works. In Christ, God has made us new. Our worth rests on what Jesus has done, so a bad grade, a lost job, a breakup, or a critical comment cannot take it away.

Living From Purpose, Not Pressure

For good works, which God prepared beforehand. God not only made you; he has a purpose for you. Insecurity says you have nothing to offer. God has placed you in your family, school, workplace, and community with opportunities to love and serve.

That we should walk in them. You do not need your whole life figured out, only the next faithful step. Because God prepared the good works, the pressure to prove yourself lifts.

When insecurity speaks, answer it with truth: I am God’s workmanship. I am loved in Christ. I have a purpose. It also helps to step back from apps or habits that leave you feeling worse about yourself. If insecurity has grown into ongoing anxiety or depression, talk with a counselor or trusted adult; in the US, 988 is available any time.

Today, Try This

Write the three insecure thoughts you believe most often. Next to each, write one truth from Ephesians 2:10, and read the truths aloud whenever the old thoughts return today.

Reflection Question

Where have you been looking for your worth, and what would change if you believed you are God’s workmanship?

Prayer

Lord, thank you that I am your workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. When insecurity whispers lies, help me hear your truth. Free me from comparison and from needing others’ approval, and help me walk in the good works you prepared for me. Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about insecurity?

The Bible locates our worth in God, not in performance or approval. Ephesians 2:10 (ESV) says we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. Psalm 139 adds that God knit us together and knows us fully. Insecurity loosens its grip as we believe what God says about us.

How do I find my identity in Christ?

Identity in Christ begins with trusting Jesus, who makes us new (2 Corinthians 5:17, ESV). Then it grows as we replace old labels with God’s truth through Scripture, prayer, and community. Ephesians 2:8–10 (ESV) is a helpful place to start: saved by grace, made by God, created for good works.

Is insecurity a sin?

Feeling insecure is not itself a sin; it is a common human struggle. It can, however, push us toward unhealthy patterns like envy, people-pleasing, or hiding. The answer is not shame but truth: bringing our fears to God and receiving the identity he gives in Christ (Ephesians 2:10, ESV).
