Devotional on Hearing God’s Voice: John 10:27

· Devotionals

For February 6

This devotional on hearing God’s voice starts with Jesus’ promise that his followers can recognize him: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27, ESV). God speaks first and most clearly through Scripture, and also through prayer and wise believers. Make quiet space to listen, and be ready to follow.

Key Verse

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27, ESV)

The Good Shepherd Speaks

Many Christians long to hear God’s voice but feel unsure how. In John 10, Jesus calls himself the good shepherd. Shepherds spent long days and nights with their flocks, and the sheep learned their shepherd’s voice. When he called, they followed; when a stranger called, they did not.

Jesus says his sheep recognize his voice. He states this as a fact, not a goal for spiritual experts. If you belong to him, you can hear him. He also says he knows them. Before we know his voice, he knows us, our names, needs, and history. We are not straining to find a distant God; we are responding to a Shepherd who is already calling.

How God Speaks Today

The primary way Jesus speaks today is through Scripture. As we read, the Holy Spirit helps us understand and apply it. The more familiar we are with the Bible, the more readily we recognize his voice, and any impression that contradicts his written word is not his voice.

He also speaks through prayer as we bring our concerns and listen, through counsel from mature believers, through the gathered church, and sometimes through open or closed doors. Often his voice is not loud. It may come as a gentle conviction, a sense of peace, or a verse that suddenly feels personal.

Listening and Following

Sheep learn their shepherd’s voice by spending time with him, and so do we. Make space for Scripture, prayer, and quiet, and his voice becomes familiar.

Jesus adds that his sheep follow him. Hearing and following go together. Sometimes we struggle to hear because we already have the answer we want. Coming with an open heart, ready to obey, positions us to listen. You belong to him, he knows you, and he is speaking.

Today, Try This

Set aside ten quiet minutes. Read John 10:1–18 slowly, then ask the Lord what he wants you to notice today. Write down what stands out and test it against Scripture.

Reflection Question

What distractions or habits might be making it harder for you to hear the Shepherd’s voice?

Prayer

Good Shepherd, thank you that I belong to your flock and that you know me. Open my ears to hear your voice through your word, through prayer, and through your people. Give me a willing heart to follow wherever you lead. Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if God is speaking to me?

Test what you sense against Scripture first; God never contradicts his written word. Then ask whether it draws you toward Jesus, love, and holiness, seek counsel from mature believers, and pray for confirmation. Jesus promised in John 10:27 (ESV) that his sheep hear his voice, so you can listen with confidence.

Does God still speak today?

Yes. God speaks most clearly and reliably through the Bible, which Hebrews 4:12 describes as living and active. The Holy Spirit also guides believers through prayer, conviction, wise counsel, and circumstances. Every impression should be weighed against Scripture, which is the final authority.

How can I hear God’s voice more clearly?

Spend regular, unhurried time in Scripture and prayer, reduce noise and distraction, and come with a willing heart to obey. Journaling what you sense and discussing it with trusted believers helps too. Like sheep who know their shepherd (John 10:27, ESV), we recognize his voice through time with him.
