Abundant Life Devotional: John 10:10 Meaning

· Devotionals

For July 12

An abundant life devotional starts with Jesus’ contrast in John 10:10 (ESV): “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” Jesus does not shrink our lives. He gives real, full, overflowing life that begins now and lasts forever.

Key Verse

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10, ESV)

Two Visitors

Jesus describes two who come to the sheep. The thief comes to take. Jesus comes to give. Every voice that pulls us away from him eventually takes more than it gives, even if it promises excitement or freedom.

Sin often looks like abundance at first. In the end, it steals peace, kills joy, and destroys relationships.

What Abundant Life Is Not

Some teach that abundant life means wealth, health, and success. But Jesus said this just before calling himself the good shepherd who gives his life for his flock (John 10:11). His own life included poverty, rejection, and a cross. Abundance is not measured by possessions.

Many believers who suffer greatly testify that they have found the fullest life in Christ.

What Abundant Life Is

Abundant life is life with God. Jesus later prays that eternal life is knowing the one true God and the Son he sent (John 17:3). It includes forgiveness, purpose, belonging, hope, and joy that circumstances cannot fully take away.

It is also overflowing. Jesus’ life in us spills out in love, generosity, and service. Abundant life is never only for ourselves.

Starts Now

Eternal life is not only after death. It starts the moment we trust Jesus. Today can be part of abundant life, even if it is ordinary or hard, because the Shepherd is with you.

When Life Feels Thin

Some seasons feel empty rather than abundant. Depression, grief, or burnout can make it hard to feel anything. If that is you, you are not failing at faith. Talk with a trusted person, a pastor, or a counselor. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 in the US. Jesus’ care often comes through people.

The Shepherd stays with weary sheep. Abundant life includes being carried when we cannot walk.

Abundant life often looks ordinary from the outside: a shared meal, a quiet prayer, a hard day met with peace. Its richness is in the One we walk with.

Going Deeper: John 10:10 Phrase by Phrase

Context

Jesus spoke these words right after healing a man born blind (John 9), whom the religious leaders threw out of the synagogue. In John 10, Jesus contrasts himself with false shepherds. He is “the door of the sheep” (v. 7) and “the good shepherd” who “lays down his life for the sheep” (v. 11). (For the full passage, see our Good Shepherd study.)

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy”

In context, the “thief” is anyone who comes to the sheep for selfish gain: false teachers and leaders who use people rather than care for them (vv. 1, 8). Many Christians also rightly see Satan behind such destruction (John 8:44). The thief takes; he never gives.

“I came that they may have life”

The contrast is total. Jesus came to give. “Life” in John means eternal life: knowing God through Jesus (John 17:3). It begins now and lasts forever.

“And have it abundantly”

“Abundantly” means overflowing, more than enough. This isn’t a promise of wealth or an easy life; the same Jesus said, “In the world you will have tribulation” (John 16:33). Abundant life is the fullness of being known, loved, forgiven, guided, and kept by the Shepherd, even in hard times (Psalm 23).

How Jesus Gives It

Verse 11 tells us: “The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” The thief takes life; the Shepherd gives his own. Abundant life comes to us through the cross and resurrection (vv. 17-18).

Today, Try This

Think of one thing that has been stealing your peace or joy. Name it to Jesus today and ask him to replace it with something life-giving from his word.

Reflection Question

Where do you see the thief stealing in your life, and where do you see Jesus giving life?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you for coming to give me life abundantly. Guard me from the lies that steal and destroy. Fill me with your life, and let it overflow to others. When I feel empty, carry me and hold me close. In your name, amen.
