An I am the door devotional begins with Jesus’ simple picture in John 10:9 (ESV): “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.” Jesus is the one entrance into God’s safe fold, where his sheep find rescue, freedom, and nourishment.
Key Verse
“I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.” (John 10:9, ESV)
A Shepherd’s Doorway
In Jesus’ day, sheep were often kept at night in a stone enclosure with one opening. Some shepherds would lie across that opening. Nothing could get in or out without passing the shepherd. He was the door.
When Jesus says he is the door, he means that he personally guards his people and is the only way in.
One Door, Not Many
This is a narrow claim, and it fits the narrow gate Jesus spoke about in the Sermon on the Mount. There are not many doors into God’s family. There is one, and it is a Person. That can sound exclusive, but notice that the door is open. Anyone may enter by him.
You do not need a special background, a clean record, or religious credentials. You need to come through Jesus.
Saved
The first promise is salvation. Inside the fold, the sheep are safe from thieves and wolves. In Christ, we are rescued from sin and judgment. No enemy can drag us back out.
In and Out
Jesus says his sheep will go in and out. That is a picture of freedom and ordinary life. Sheep are not locked away. They rest inside at night and go out to graze by day, always under the shepherd’s care.
Following Jesus does not shrink life. It gives us security to rest and freedom to live.
Find Pasture
Finally, the sheep find pasture. Jesus feeds his people. Through his word, his Spirit, and his church, he gives what our souls need. The next verse promises abundant life, which we will look at tomorrow.
If you feel spiritually hungry, the answer is not a new door. It is going deeper through the one you already know.
Have You Entered?
Hearing about the door is not the same as walking through it. Faith means trusting Jesus personally. If you have never done that, you can today by turning to him and asking him to save you.
Today, Try This
Read John 10:1-10 slowly. Notice every phrase about the door and the sheep. Then tell Jesus in your own words that you are entering by him and trusting him to keep you.
Reflection Question
Where are you looking for safety or nourishment outside of Jesus, the one door?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are the door. Thank you that anyone may enter by you. I come to you for safety, freedom, and food for my soul. Keep me in your fold and lead me to good pasture. In your name, amen.
