This way, truth and life devotional begins with Jesus’ answer to a confused disciple. In John 14:6 (ESV), “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” Jesus does not just show the way to God. He is the way.
Key Verse
“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” (John 14:6, ESV)
Thomas Asks a Question
Jesus told his disciples he was going ahead to make a home ready for them and that they knew the way. Thomas was honest: he said they had no idea where Jesus was going, so how could they know the way there (John 14:5)?
Thomas wanted directions. Jesus gave him a Person.
The Way
Jesus is the way to the Father. We do not climb to God by effort or find him by our own wisdom. Jesus came down to bring us home. Following him is how we reach the Father.
That links to his teaching about the narrow gate. The way is narrow because it is one Person, but it is open to anyone who trusts him.
The Truth
Jesus is the truth. In a world of shifting opinions, he is reality as God sees it. He shows us who God is and who we are. When we want to know what is true, we look at Jesus.
The Life
Jesus is the life. He is the source of eternal life and the power that raises the dead. Without him we are spiritually lifeless. With him we live now and forever.
Exclusive and Inviting
Many people struggle with the second sentence: nobody reaches the Father except through Jesus. It sounds narrow. It is. But consider: if there is one way, God did not leave us guessing. He sent his Son and opened the way at great cost. That is love, not arrogance.
Christians should hold this truth with humility and kindness. We do not boast. We point beggars to bread.
Many roads promise peace, success, or meaning, and some of them look appealing for a while. Jesus does not offer himself as one good option among many. He is the living way home to the Father, and he walks it with you.
Today, Try This
Write three short sentences: one finishing the phrase Jesus is my way when, one for Jesus is my truth when, and one for Jesus is my life when. Pray them back to him.
Reflection Question
Which of these three, the way, the truth, or the life, do you most need Jesus to be for you this week?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are my way, my truth and my life. Thank you for opening the way to the Father. When I am lost, lead me. When I am confused, teach me. When I feel lifeless, fill me. Help me share you with humility and love. In your name, amen.
