Christmas Eve Devotional: Mary Treasured, Shepherds Praised

· Devotionals

Updated for Christmas 2026 (Advent begins Sunday, November 29; Christmas Eve is Thursday, December 24).

This Christmas Eve devotional on Luke 2 sits with two responses to Jesus: “Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart” (Luke 2:19, ESV), and the shepherds returned “glorifying and praising God” (Luke 2:20, ESV). Tonight you can do both: be still and wonder, then praise.

Key Verse

“But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.” (Luke 2:19–20, ESV)

Reflection

The Christmas story does not end with the manger scene. Luke tells us what happened next, and he describes two very different responses to the birth of Jesus. Mary treasured and pondered. The shepherds returned glorifying and praising. Both responses are worth learning from on this Christmas Eve.

But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. Mary had experienced a whirlwind: an angel’s announcement, a long journey, a birth in a stable, and now unexpected visitors telling stories of angels. Rather than rushing past it all, she held these things close. To treasure means to keep safely, like something precious. To ponder means to turn something over carefully in the mind, considering its meaning.

Mary did not understand everything. She would spend years discovering who her son was and what his life would cost. But she did not let the wonder slip away. She stored it up. That quiet reflection likely sustained her through the hard years ahead, including the day she stood at the foot of the cross.

And the shepherds returned. They went back to their fields, their sheep, and their ordinary lives. Nothing about their job had changed. But they had changed. They returned glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. Their night shift became a worship service.

As it had been told them. Everything matched God’s word. The shepherds praised God not only for what they experienced but because God proved faithful to what he had said.

Christmas invites both responses. Some of us need Mary’s example. In a season full of noise and activity, we need to slow down, treasure what God has done, and ponder its meaning. Without that, Christmas can come and go without leaving much behind.

Others need the shepherds’ example. We need to carry the wonder of Christmas back into ordinary life, glorifying God at work, at home, and in our neighborhoods. Christmas is not meant to stay in a stable or a sanctuary. It goes with us.

Really, we need both. Pondering without praising can turn inward. Praising without pondering can become shallow. Mary and the shepherds together show us a full response to Jesus: deep reflection and joyful witness.

Tonight, take a few moments to treasure the story. Ponder what it means that God came as a baby to save you. Then, tomorrow and in the days ahead, return to your life glorifying and praising God for all you have heard and seen.

Today, Try This

Tonight, write down one thing about the Christmas story you want to treasure and ponder in the coming year. Tomorrow, share with at least one person something you are praising God for this Christmas.

Reflection Question

Do you tend to respond to God more like Mary, pondering quietly, or like the shepherds, praising openly, and how might you grow in the other?

Prayer

Lord, thank you for coming to us on that holy night. Like Mary, help me treasure and ponder all you have done. Like the shepherds, send me back into my ordinary life glorifying and praising you. Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean that Mary treasured all these things?

It means Mary carefully kept and reflected on everything that happened at Jesus' birth. Luke 2:19 says she held these things close and thought them over. She did not understand it all at once, but she held God's work close and let it shape her over time.

How did the shepherds respond after seeing Jesus?

The shepherds went back to their fields praising God for all that the angels had told them and they had witnessed (Luke 2:20). They went back to the same work, but changed. They also told others what the angels had said, making them some of the first witnesses of Jesus.

How can I ponder Christmas like Mary?

Ponder Christmas like Mary by slowing down and reflecting quietly. On Christmas Eve, set aside a few minutes to reread Luke 2, write down one thing God has done this year, and ask what it reveals about Him. Treasuring is attention plus gratitude.
