A parable of the lost sheep devotional reveals the heart of a seeking God. In Luke 15:4 (ESV), Jesus asks what man, having a hundred sheep and losing one, does not leave the ninety-nine and go after the lost one until he finds it. God does not shrug off the lost. He searches for them.
Key Verse
““What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?” (Luke 15:4, ESV)
Why Jesus Told the Story
Tax collectors and sinners were drawing near to hear Jesus. The Pharisees and scribes grumbled that he welcomed sinners and ate with them. In response, Jesus told three stories: a lost sheep, a lost coin, and a lost son. Each ends with joy when what was lost is found.
Jesus was explaining why he spent time with people others rejected.
One Matters
A hundred sheep was a sizable flock. Losing one might seem like an acceptable loss. But the shepherd goes after the one. Every single person matters to God. You are not just a number in a crowd. If you wander, he notices and comes for you.
This also challenges us. Do we care about the one who has drifted away from church or faith?
Until He Finds It
The shepherd searches until he finds it. God’s pursuit is persistent. When the shepherd finds the sheep, he lifts it onto his shoulders with joy. He does not scold or drive it home with a stick. He carries it.
That is how God treats wanderers who are found: with joy and tender care.
Joy in Heaven
Jesus says heaven celebrates one repentant sinner more than ninety-nine who think they need no repentance. Heaven celebrates returning sinners. If you are coming back to God, heaven is not frowning. It is rejoicing.
Join the Search
As followers of the Good Shepherd, we can join his search. Reach out to someone who has drifted. Pray for prodigals by name. Welcome returners warmly.
You may feel like the lost sheep yourself today, far from God and unsure how to get back. The good news is that the shepherd is already searching. You do not have to find your own way home. Simply let him carry you.
Today, Try This
Think of one person who has drifted from faith or church. Pray for them today and send a simple message letting them know you care.
Reflection Question
Have you ever been the lost sheep, and how did God find you?
Prayer
Good Shepherd, thank you for coming after me when I wandered. Thank you for carrying me home with joy. Give me your heart for the lost. Help me pray for and reach out to those who have drifted, and let me rejoice when they are found. Amen.
