Jesus Calms the Storm Devotional: Peace! Be Still!

For July 21

A Jesus calms the storm devotional begins on a sinking boat. In Mark 4:39-40 (ESV) Jesus rebuked the storm and told the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then he asked his frightened disciples why they were so scared and whether they still had no faith (Mark 4:40). The One who rules the storm is with us in it.

Key Verse

“And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” (Mark 4:39, ESV)

The Sea of Galilee

The Sea of Galilee is a freshwater lake about thirteen miles long, surrounded by hills. Because it sits well below sea level, cool air rushing down from the surrounding heights can whip up sudden, violent storms. Several of Jesus’ disciples were experienced fishermen who knew these waters well, which makes their terror even more striking. This storm was beyond anything they could handle.

Mark places this story at the end of a long day of teaching in parables. Jesus had been speaking to large crowds from a boat. Exhausted, he fell asleep in the stern. The storm that followed would reveal something the parables had only hinted at: the teacher in the boat was the Lord of creation.

A Storm With Jesus on Board

Jesus had told his disciples to cross the lake with him that evening. They obeyed. Then a great windstorm hit, and waves filled the boat. Obedience did not keep them out of the storm.

That is worth remembering. Being where God wants you does not mean life will be calm.

Asleep in the Stern

Jesus was asleep on a cushion. The disciples woke him and asked whether he cared that they were perishing. It is the same question many of us ask in hard times. God, do you see this? Do you care?

His sleep was not indifference. It was the rest of perfect trust in the Father.

Two Words

Jesus stood and spoke to the wind and waves as if they were servants. Peace. Be still. Immediately the wind stopped and a great calm followed. Storms do not take orders from anyone except their Creator.

The disciples went from fearing the storm to fearing Jesus with awe. They wondered aloud what kind of man could give orders to the weather.

The Question After the Calm

Jesus asked why they were afraid. He was not mocking their fear. He was calling them to trust him. They had seen his power and heard his teaching, yet in the storm they forgot who was in the boat.

Faith is not the absence of fear. It is bringing our fear to the One with authority over it.

When the Storm Does Not Stop

Sometimes Jesus calms the storm around us. Sometimes he calms the storm inside us while the wind keeps blowing. Either way he does not leave the boat. If your storm includes panic or overwhelming anxiety, reaching out to a counselor or doctor can be part of how he brings calm.

Bringing Your Storm to Jesus

When storms hit, our first instinct is often to panic or to try to fix everything ourselves. The disciples did the right thing in one way: they went to Jesus. Even though their faith was shaky, they brought their fear to him.

Do the same today. Tell Jesus plainly what frightens you. Then take time to remember who he is: the Lord whose word the wind obeys. You may still feel the waves, but you can rest knowing he is in the boat. Consider sharing your storm with a trusted friend who will pray with you, so you do not face it alone.

Today, Try This

Name the storm you are in right now. Pray Mark 4:39 aloud, asking Jesus to speak peace either to the storm or to your heart, and write down any way you notice calm this week.

Reflection Question

What storm makes you wonder whether Jesus cares, and what does this story say about him?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you rule the wind and the waves. In my storms I sometimes wonder whether you care. Thank you that you are with me in the boat. Speak peace to my circumstances and to my heart, and grow my faith. In your name, amen.
