God With Us Meaning: Immanuel in Ordinary Days

· Devotionals

Updated for Advent 2026, which begins Sunday, November 29.

Key Verse

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). (Matthew 1:23, ESV)

Reflection

The name Immanuel, "God with us" (Matthew 1:23), means God is present not only in dramatic, mountaintop moments but also in ordinary days. This devotional reflects on finding Jesus' nearness in routine work, chores, commutes, and quiet hours, and on how remembering his presence can change the way we live everyday life.

Consider how Jesus spent most of his years on earth. The Gospels tell us about his birth and then, aside from one story at age twelve, they skip ahead about thirty years. During that time, Jesus lived in Nazareth, a small town of little reputation. He worked as a carpenter or builder, learning a trade from Joseph. He ate meals, did chores, went to the synagogue, and lived as part of a family and a village.

God with us spent decades in ordinary life. That means ordinary life matters to God. Washing dishes, commuting to work, changing diapers, filling out spreadsheets, caring for aging parents, mowing the lawn: none of it is beneath the notice of the God who became a carpenter.

It also means God can be found in the ordinary. Brother Lawrence, a seventeenth-century monk who worked in a monastery kitchen, became known for what he called practicing the presence of God. He discovered that he could commune with God as deeply while scrubbing pots as while praying in the chapel. The key was not the activity but the awareness.

That awareness is something we can grow. It begins with remembering, throughout the day, that God is with us. A quick prayer while waiting in line. A word of thanks while folding laundry. A moment of surrender before a meeting. Over time, these small habits help us notice that ordinary moments are full of God’s presence.

The Christmas season can push us toward the extraordinary: big gatherings, perfect gifts, elaborate decorations. There is nothing wrong with celebration. But we can also miss the quiet gift of Immanuel in the everyday. The God who came as a baby in a simple stable is present in your simple, ordinary day.

If you feel your life is too small or routine to matter, remember that Jesus lived much of his life in obscurity, and it pleased the Father. At his baptism, before he had preached a sermon or performed a miracle, the Father declared his love and delight in him. Faithfulness in ordinary places is never wasted.

Ordinary faithfulness also shapes us. The small, unseen choices to be patient, honest, and kind in routine moments are often where character is formed. God is at work in those moments, quietly making us more like his Son, even when nothing seems to be happening.

Today, look for God in the ordinary. He is with you, not only in the special moments, but in the routine ones too.

Today, Try This

Pick one routine task you will do today, such as washing dishes, driving, or answering email, and do it slowly and prayerfully, inviting God into it and thanking him for his presence.

Reflection Question

Where in your ordinary routine could you become more aware that God is with you?

Prayer

Immanuel, thank you for living an ordinary life and for being with me in my ordinary days. Open my eyes to your presence in routine moments. Let me do even small tasks with you and for you. Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is God with us in ordinary, everyday life?

God is with us in ordinary life because Jesus lived an ordinary life, working as a carpenter, eating meals, and keeping friendships. The name Immanuel, God with us (Matthew 1:23), applies to dishes, commutes, and routines, not only to dramatic moments or church services.

How can I notice God's presence during a normal day?

Notice God's presence by pausing briefly at set points in the day, such as meals or travel, to thank Him and invite Him into what you are doing. Brother Lawrence called this "practicing the presence of God." Small prayers turn routine moments into worship.

Does God care about small things?

Yes. Jesus said God feeds sparrows and numbers the hairs on your head. Nothing is too small for His attention. Because God is with us, the minor worries and joys of daily life are worth bringing to Him in prayer.
