Introduction
The most encouraging Bible verses for hard times point to who God is: present with us wherever we go (Joshua 1:9), on our side (Romans 8:31), and already victorious in Jesus (John 16:33). Some days we just need someone to tell us to take heart and keep going, and God says exactly that in his word, again and again. Here they are, grouped by theme, each with a short explanation.
These verses aren’t pep talks. They are promises from a God who keeps his word, and each one points beyond our circumstances to his presence, his purpose and the victory of Jesus.
1. Be Strong and Courageous
Joshua 1:9: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” God repeats the call to courage three times in Joshua 1. The reason is never Joshua’s own talent. It’s the promise of God’s company in every place he will go.
Joshua faced a huge task after Moses died. God’s encouragement wasn’t “you’ve got this,” but “I am with you.” Our courage rests on his presence.
Isaiah 41:10: God tells his people not to fear, because he is with them and will strengthen, help, and hold them up. Isaiah spoke to people who felt small and forgotten. God answers their fear with a string of promises: his presence, his strength, his help and his steady grip. Courage grows as we count up who is holding us.
2. God Is for You
Romans 8:31: If God is on our side, no opponent can win. Paul asks this question after laying out God’s plan to save his people from beginning to end. The point isn’t that nothing will oppose us, but that no opponent can undo what God has done.
Zephaniah 3:17: God delights in his people, quiets them with his love, and sings over them. This picture is surprising. The Creator rejoices over his people like a parent over a newborn. If you feel unwanted, read this verse slowly and let it reshape how you think God sees you in Christ.
God isn’t reluctantly putting up with you. In Christ, he delights in you.
3. Don’t Give Up
Galatians 6:9: Don’t tire of doing good; the harvest comes if we keep going. Paul writes to people tempted to quit doing good because it seemed to make no difference. Harvests take time. Faithfulness that feels invisible today is not wasted.
2 Corinthians 4:16: Though our bodies wear out, our inner life is renewed day by day. Paul had been beaten, shipwrecked and worn down. He doesn’t deny the decline of his body. He points to an inner renewal that happens one day at a time.
Isaiah 40:31: Those who wait on the Lord receive new strength to rise, run, and keep walking. Waiting here means looking to God in hope. Notice the order: soaring, running and then walking. Sometimes the greatest strength is the grace to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
4. Your Struggle Has Purpose
Romans 8:28: God weaves all things together for the good of people who love him. This promise is for people who love God, and the good it describes is our growth into the likeness of Christ (Romans 8:29). It doesn’t call every event good, but it promises God is at work in all of them.
James 1:2-3: Meet trials with joy, because tested faith produces endurance. James doesn’t ask us to enjoy pain. He asks us to see what God is building through it. Endurance can’t be learned in easy seasons.
God wastes nothing, not even our pain.
5. Jesus Has Overcome
John 16:33: Jesus warns that the world brings trouble but tells us to take heart, because he has overcome it. Jesus said this hours before his arrest. He was honest that trouble would come, and just as honest that he had already won. Our peace rests on his victory, not on calm circumstances.
Philippians 1:6: God will finish the good work he started in you. Paul’s confidence isn’t in the Philippians’ strength but in God’s commitment. If God began a work in you, he doesn’t abandon half-finished projects.
The Gospel Focus
The deepest encouragement isn’t that things will get easier, but that Jesus has already won. He died for your sins and rose again, and nothing can separate you from his love (Romans 8:39). On the hardest days, your future is secure in him.
How to Apply This
- Pick one verse for the week. Write it on a card, set it as your phone background or tape it to the mirror. Read it out loud each morning.
- Encourage someone else. Send one of these verses to a friend who is struggling, with a short note that you’re praying for them. Hebrews 3:13 calls us to encourage one another every day.
- Pray Isaiah 41:10 when you feel weak. Turn each promise into a request: be with me, strengthen me, help me, hold me.
- Remember past faithfulness. Write down a time God carried you through. Looking back is one of the best ways to find courage for what’s ahead.
- Keep doing good. Choose one faithful task you’re tempted to quit and do it again this week, trusting the harvest to God (Galatians 6:9).
