A devotional on suffering does not pretend pain is small. Romans 5:3-5 says hardship builds staying power, staying power builds proven character, and that character grows into hope, a hope that will never let us down. God does not waste your pain. He is at work in it, pouring his love into your heart.
Key Verse
“and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” (Romans 5:5, ESV)
Rejoicing in Suffering?
Paul’s words can sound strange, even hard. Rejoice in our sufferings? Paul is not saying pain is good or that we should pretend to be happy when we hurt. He knew suffering well: beatings, shipwrecks, hunger, rejection, and prison. He is saying that believers can have a deep, steady joy even in suffering because of what God is producing through it.
Our joy is not in the pain itself. It is in the God who is with us in it and who promises it will not be meaningless.
The Chain of Hope
Paul describes a chain. Suffering produces endurance, the ability to keep going under pressure. Endurance produces character, a tested and proven faith. And character produces hope. Strangely, the very things that seem to threaten our hope end up strengthening it, because we learn through experience that God holds us.
This growth is rarely quick. It often happens in seasons we would never choose. But God is patient and faithful, and he finishes what he starts.
God’s Love Poured Out
Why does this hope not disappoint us? Because God’s love is poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Our hope does not rest on circumstances improving. It rests on the love of God shown at the cross and made real in us by his Spirit.
If you are suffering today, you do not have to feel strong. Bring your pain honestly to the Lord. Let others help carry it. Lament is a faithful response, and the Psalms are full of it.

Some suffering is so heavy that it brings thoughts of giving up. If that is where you are, please reach out today to someone you trust, a pastor, or a counselor. In the US, you can call or text 988 at any hour. Asking for help is not a lack of faith. It is one way God carries you.
Today, Try This
Write down one hard thing you are facing, then beneath it write one way you have seen God’s love or presence right in it.
Reflection Question
How has a past season of suffering shaped your character or deepened your hope in God?
Prayer
Father, you know the pain I carry. I do not understand it all, but I trust that you are with me. Use this suffering to build endurance, character, and hope in me. Pour your love into my heart by your Spirit, and hold me when I feel weak. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Romans 5:3-5 mean?
Romans 5:3-5 (ESV) teaches that believers can rejoice even in suffering because God uses it to produce endurance, character, and hope. This hope is secure because God’s love is poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.
Why does God allow suffering?
Scripture does not answer every question, but it shows that suffering entered through sin and that God works through it for his people’s good. He shares our pain in Christ, uses suffering to form us, and promises a future without tears.
How should a Christian respond to suffering?
Bring your pain honestly to God through prayer and lament, lean on other believers, hold onto his promises, and seek practical and professional help when needed. Suffering does not mean God has abandoned you.
