A devotional on spiritual gifts celebrates how God equips his people. First Corinthians 12:4-7 teaches that the gifts differ but they all come from one Spirit, and each believer is given a gift to serve the good of everyone. Every believer has something to offer. Your gift matters to the body of Christ.
Key Verse
“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit…” (1 Corinthians 12:4, ESV)
Variety With Unity
The church in Corinth was gifted but divided. Some prized flashy gifts and looked down on others. Paul reminds them that every gift has one source: one Spirit, one Lord and one God. Variety is not a problem to fix. It is God’s design.
A body needs eyes, hands, and feet. A church needs teachers, helpers, encouragers, givers, leaders, and people who show mercy.
To Each Is Given
Paul says to each is given. No believer is left out. You may not have a public gift, but you have been given something by the Spirit. Some gifts are quiet: hospitality, faith, administration, generosity, compassion. They are just as needed as preaching or leading worship.
Comparing gifts leads to pride or discouragement. Using them leads to joy.
For the Common Good
Spiritual gifts are not trophies. They are tools for building others up. Their purpose is the common good. When we use our gifts to serve, the whole church grows stronger and Christ is honored.
In the next chapter, Paul says that without love, even impressive gifts are worthless. Love is the way all gifts should be used.
Discovering Your Gifts
How do you find your gifts? Try serving in different ways. Notice what others affirm in you. Pay attention to where you see fruit and feel joy. Ask mature believers for their observations. Gifts often become clear as we step out and serve.
Using Them Now
As Pentecost approaches, remember that the Spirit who came with power also gives gifts to every believer. Ask him how he wants to use you this season.
It is easy to compare your gift with someone else’s and decide yours is too small. But a body needs hands and feet as much as it needs a voice. The quiet encourager, the faithful giver and the person who notices who is missing are all doing work the Spirit gave them to do. When you serve with the gift you have, the whole church grows stronger, and others find room to use theirs.
Today, Try This
Ask two people who know you well what gifts they see in you. Then choose one way to use that gift in your church this month.
Reflection Question
How is God inviting you to use your gifts for the good of others?
Prayer
Holy Spirit, thank you for the gifts you give. Show me how you have equipped me, and help me use my gifts in love for the common good. Free me from comparison and pride, and build up your church through me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
