For April 29

A devotional for singles offers hope rooted in David’s prayer: “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11, ESV). Whether you are single by choice, by circumstance, or after loss, your life is not on hold. Fullness of joy is found in God’s presence.

Key Verse

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11, ESV)

The Setting of Psalm 16

Psalm 16 is a psalm of trust written by David. He begins by asking God to preserve him, because he takes refuge in him (Psalm 16:1). Then he says something remarkable: he has no good apart from God (Psalm 16:2). Everything good in his life flows from the Lord.

David goes on to call the Lord his chosen portion and his cup, and to say that the boundary lines have fallen for him in pleasant places (Psalm 16:5–6). In ancient Israel, land was divided by lot, and each family received a portion. David says his true inheritance is not land but God himself. That changes how he sees everything else.

The psalm ends with our key verse. In Acts, Peter quotes this psalm to show that it pointed ahead to Jesus’ resurrection (Acts 2:25–28). The path of life ultimately runs through Christ, who conquered death.

Single in a Couples’ World

Many single adults feel out of place, especially in churches that center much of their programming on marriage and family. Well-meaning comments, such as, don’t worry, God has someone for you, can sting. Singles may feel invisible, pitied, or treated as if their real life has not started yet.

Some singles long deeply for marriage. Others are content. Some are widowed or divorced and grieving. Each experience is real, and God sees it.

The Path of Life

David says God makes known the path of life. Not the path to marriage, or the path to a certain career, but the path of life itself. Your life is not a waiting room. It is a path God is actively showing you, today, with purpose and meaning.

Jesus himself was single, and he lived the fullest human life ever lived. Paul was single and described singleness as a gift that let him give the Lord his full attention (1 Corinthians 7:7, 32–35). Scripture never treats single people as incomplete.

Fullness of Joy

The deepest joy is not found in a relationship status. It is found in God’s presence. Marriage is a good gift, but it cannot fill the place only God can fill. Married people also learn that a spouse cannot meet every need. In God’s presence joy is full, not partial joy waiting to be completed by someone else.

That does not mean loneliness is not real or that desire for marriage is wrong. You can bring your longings honestly to God, as the psalmists often did. But you can also know that your joy is not on hold.

Community and Belonging

God designed people for community, not isolation. The church is meant to be a family where singles belong fully, not as an afterthought. Jesus said that everyone who does God’s will is his family: brother, sister, and mother (Mark 3:35). Invest in deep friendships, serve in your church, and invite others into your life. Married friends and families can also open their homes and lives to singles.

If loneliness has turned into deep sadness or despair, please talk with a trusted friend, pastor, or counselor. In the U.S., you can call or text 988 anytime.

A Personal Application: Live Fully This Season

Make a short list of things this season of life allows you to do well: perhaps flexible time to serve, the ability to travel or relocate for ministry, space for deep friendships, or more time for prayer and Scripture. Choose one and invest in it this month. Also choose one person or family to build a closer friendship with, perhaps by sharing a weekly meal. Living fully now is not giving up on hopes for the future. It is trusting that God’s path of life is good today.

Today, Try This

Write down three ways God has shown you his presence and goodness in this season of your life, and thank him for each.

Reflection Question

Where have you been treating your life as on hold, and what would it look like to walk God’s path of life today?

Prayer

Lord, you are my portion and my joy. Thank you that my life is not on hold. Show me the path you have for me today. Meet my loneliness with your presence, and surround me with a church family. Help me trust you with my longings and find fullness of joy in you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
